Stronger Together: Celebrating the Importance of Sport and Movement
Sport and physical activity strengthen communities by promoting inclusion, connection, and overall well-being. April includes key April awareness days, including International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, World Physical Activity Day, and Green Shirt Day, and their impact on health, equality, and community engagement.
The community created by sport should be uplifting, empowering and inclusive. Such attributes offer opportunities for everyone, where diversity is celebrated, leading to societal advancement of togetherness. The goal of sport is to offer activities where athletes feel a part of a team or club. Furthermore, by joining sport, personal well-being and fitness is supported by maintaining physical activity in a day to day routine. April marks the month in which we celebrate International Day of Sport for Development and Peace and World Physical Activity Day. These days promote sport, highlighting the above mentioned key ideas.
Bridges Built, Barriers Broken
Set by the United Nations General Assembly, April 6th is the day of International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. A day to raise awareness, demonstrating how sport is a catalyst to good health, gender equality, increased peace and further inclusive practices. Dialogue shared in international meetings highlight the importance of sport in such aspects. Knowing the power behind sports, it is crucial to have as many chances to partake in activities in our communities. By doing so, youth and adults can learn new skills, practice social connections, and foster good health. On this day, we highlight what sport has brought to us. Continuing on this path to break down barriers can push for increased participation, which opens doors for new and returning athletes. Creating Opportunities For Equality, Health and Community
These days of celebrating sport and physical activity are inspiring to us in terms of personal growth and community development. In addition to these international days, taking place on April 7th, is Green Shirt Day. This day is dedicated to bringing awareness to organ donation and organ donation registration. Inspired by Logan Boulet, a hockey player who passed in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash, saving 6 lives through organ donation. Logan’s legacy has inspired over 150 000 people to register to become organ donors, creating the “Logan Boulet Effect”. This movement creates live changing opportunities to create a strong community of compassion, empathy and togetherness. Join us in dedicating these days to supporting and celebrating sport, community and health. (Green Shirt Day, 2020)
